Let me ask you a question (and I want you to answer honestly): How happy are you?
Most people would say “Of course I am happy!” Some might say “No, not really…”
But do you know how happy you really are? (Or are NOT?).
Let’s check it out on the Scale of Happiness; give it a score from 1 to 10. What would you rate your level of happiness?
How often do you say “I hate my job! I don’t want to go to work today!” Or “My relationship isn’t working”, “I’m fat”, “My finances are a mess”, or something else that dwells in the negative elements of your life? Sometimes you probably don’t even realise you’re doing it – it’s become a habit for your brain to seek out the things that detract from your happiness.
Your inner dialogue is constantly on. Are you listening? More importantly, WHAT are you listening to?
How do you know you are happy?
There is that little voice in your head, that critic – your ego – that wants to keep you safe and small by stopping you from truly going for the things that bring you joy. And then there is that inner voice, that intuition, that spark of magic within that tells you your truth!
Pay attention when you notice that you’re engaging in that inner dialogue, the one that comes from ego. Notice how often you hear yourself running through all the reasons why things are actually “not so bad”. This rationalisation isn’t helping you either. This little voice is trying to convince you that you ought to settle for less, that you don’t deserve to have what you desire, so you stay in a place of comfort instead of risking suffering, rejection, physical pain, or whatever else you may have conscious or subconscious fears about.
I’ll let you in on a secret: that little voice is you. YOU are allowing these thoughts to enter your head and swim around confusing and discouraging you from taking action towards your best life. By this logic, YOU can focus your mind on other thoughts, control the ones you allow to enter that space, influence how you think about yourself, and define the place from which you take action. Okay, so maybe it’s not that big of a secret.
There is a wonderful affirmation by Louise Hay that brilliantly summarises this idea:
‘I change my life when I change my thinking. I am Light. I am Spirit. I am a wonderful, capable being. And it is time for me to acknowledge that I create my own reality with my thoughts. If I want to change my reality, then it is time for me to change my mind.’
Do you see where I’m going with this? Trying to justify situations that are not working for you kills your lifeforce. You deserve and are worthy of everything you desire and wish to be!
Take our happiness scale questionnaire
Why not do a quick check-in on how happy you are with different aspects of your life?
The 1-10 Scale of Happiness only takes a moment and gives you crystal clear clarity.
Close your eyes and take a deep breath. Let everything go. Tune into your heart. Do not judge or think about your answers.
Allow them to arise from within and take note of the answer you receive.
Ask yourself, on a scale of 1-10 how happy are you?
- How happy am I with my job?
- How happy am I with my relationship?
- How happy am I with my finances?
- How happy am I with my health?
- How happy am I with my friends?
- How happy am I with my family?
- How happy am I with my spirituality?
- How happy am I with my life?
Repeat this process for anything else that you wish to answer. If you receive an answer of 9 or 10, or higher (yes, that is possible), congratulations! You are definitely happy with this aspect of your life.
If you receive an answer of less than 9, there is room for improvement. (Really, there is room for improvement if you receive anything less than 10, but a 9 is pretty darn good!)
If you receive an answer of less than 5 for any or all of these questions, your life needs some serious re-alignment. You are not happy and you are not allowing yourself to live a life in the fullness of who you are!
How to be happy with where you are
Being fully happy depends a lot on how you look at it. Some would say it’s impossible to achieve 100% happiness. Others would say you should never quit pursuing your dreams. I would say, it’s a question of balance. I BELIEVE you can be truly happy IF you know what you want from life and IF you have the courage to make the changes necessary to create the reality you desire. Striving towards your purpose and actually stepping into that journey with intention is what I find most people are after.
There is really no such thing as 100% happiness, in my opinion. Happiness, like any other emotional state, fluctuates… it’s fluid, like water. But it CAN be a constant in your life. Being fully happy means knowing what happiness FEELS LIKE to you and taking actual steps to achieve that. And it means recognising when you don’t feel happy, understanding why, ACCEPTING that state, and then making the changes necessary to create a shift. I like to say ‘Change your habits, change your life’, and it couldn’t be more true, for myself and for many of the clients I have guided through this journey.
How long are you planning to wait?
Here’s the thing, though, no one can change this except you. No one can “make” you happy; no-thing can, either. Happiness is a choice that only you can make.
So, maybe it’s time for change? You can start today! You deserve and can live the life of your dreams. You CAN have it all, you just have to decide what that looks like for you and how much you WANT it.
Ask yourself this question: Are you prepared to do whatever it takes to change this aspect of your life?
Tune in again, let the answer arise from your heart space, and get started on the aspects of life for which you receive an answer of “Heck yeah!”
